The Biltmore Apartments: Issues Neglected

The Biltmore Apartments: a local, Seattle apartment building with problems.

This old building is rustic and kind of charming in a way but a building like this takes upkeep. There are many problems that arise here but the management doesn’t seem to take them seriously. Here are some photographs and a story to explain show what kinds of problems arise here at The Biltmore and just how they affect the tenants.

The building has a large room in the daylight basement where the dumpsters are kept for the use of the tenants. The problem is that there are too many tenants and too much garbage for the number of garbage cans and pick ups per week. There is so much trash that it ends up overflowing in the basement before pick up day and on the sidewalks outside on pick up days. The overflow is inconvenient to those living in the building because it smells by pick up day. Additionally, the overflow is unsanitary and unsavory when the trash overflows onto the street and is left for people to step on. This photo story shows just how the building acknowledges this problem every week when they put out the dumpsters and yet they do nothing to solve the problem.

‘Light Railing It’ to Sea-Tac

Seattle’s link light rail isn’t the most comprehensive comuter system in the country but it does simplify the process of getting to the airport. Click on the link below to get a first hand account of one person’s experience and feelings about the link light rail trip to Sea-Tac.

Free Admission To The Wing Luke Museum

The Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience is one of the premier museums in the city, and the first Smithsonian Affiliate in the Pacific Northwest.  Now you can enjoy this great resource for free on the first Thursday and third Saturday of each month. Wing Luke is a participant in the First Thursday program, which encourages local museums to allow visitors to view their collections for free on the first Thursday of each month.

Not only does Wing Luke have an excellent collection, the museum itself is located in the 100-year-old East Kong Yick building, which among other things served as a hotel for minorities shutout of the cities white-owned boarding houses. To best take advantage of its unique location, plan your visit around one of the guided tours that gives you access to parts of the building normally closed to the public, including the restored hotel and Yick Fung Co. storefront. Let this audio slideshow whet your appetite for a trip to the Wing Luke Museum.

Tours are normally offered hourly on the half hour between 10:30 and 3:30, but you can contact the museum at (206) 623-5124 ext. 133 to check the times for the day you plan on visiting. For more information, visit the Wing Luke Museum website.
