Good Video Stories

What’s the difference between video stories for the TV and video stories for the web?

The five-shot rule (watch BBC video).

  1. An extreme close-up (detail) of action (movement)
  2. Close-up of the face of the person doing the action
  3. Medium shot, face and action together
  4. Over-the-shoulder view of the action (gives viewer the point of view of the person doing the action)
  5. Another (different) angle

Watch your “picks” looking for these elements:

Twitter

    2. Avoid tilting (moving the camera vertically, up-and-down)
    3. Avoid zooming
    4. Do use the “Record Off” button to “edit” on the spot

Assignments

  • Video: Revisit your three “good” stories from Monday. Pick one and analyze it based on the 5-shot rule. Blog post by 8 am Friday.
  • Video: Pitch two stories to me by 8am Friday (other than what you brought to class today); I’ll pick one by 10 am Friday. Blog post by 8 am Monday outlining story plan. Bring video to class Wed, including voice overs, with log/transcript. We’ll compile, add titles, credits, transitions — and add stills — for a 2-minute story. If we need to do more voice overs, we’ll do them in the hall. This should not be a story that you plan to use as your final individual project. Details.
